We have all been in the position.  We need to sell our car, we want to sell it fast, and we want to get top dollar for it as well.  Then reality hits, you get few calls, no offers, and then a couple low-ball offers.  Then after you sit on the car for a long time you finally cave and sell it for far less than you ever wanted too.  Well good news!  It does not need to be that way; I will give you 5 quick tips that will help you sell your car fast and get top dollar for your car.

1)      If you post it online, take pictures, a lot of pictures.  Here is a little trick, for example if it has a small dent in the back bumper; it is ok to say it on the ad.  That way you weed out some people who are looking for something perfect.  However, if you say that there is a small dent in the back bumper.  Take a bad picture of it, so either stand far away from the car or position the camera on an angle so the dent does not look so bad.  If you don’t show a picture of it, people’s minds will automatically think the worst, this way you will have more people come to look at your car.

 2)      If you are posting it on criagslist, host an jpeg ad on a separate site and use html to show your ad on craigslist.  You can make things look a lot more creative this way.  I’m not going to give you step by step instructions on how to do it, but Google it.  There are plenty of tutorials out there.  Remember, people browsing the internet have the attention span of a gnat, so use different color text, a lot of spacing, and many bullet points.

3)      Initial proper pricing is crucial to selling your car, I know everyone would like to sell their cars for what they paid for them, but that is not the reality.  Also a lot of people price their cars base on what Kelly Blue Book says.  KBB often over values vehicles.  Instead look at comparable cars on local online classifieds go for and use that as your starting point.

4)      Don’t come down on your price on the phone.  This is a trick that any skilled car buyer knows.  What they are trying to do is get you down over the phone, so they can get you down lower when you meet in person.  If they ask if you are negotiable, just say you have a lot of appointments scheduled to look at the car already, so if the people coming to see the car are willing to pay the full price then I would accept that instead of a lower offer.

5)      Always act like the car is almost sold.  People want stuff that other people want.  A sneaky little trick is to say to someone that you have an interested buyer, they just have to get financing, and they should know by tomorrow.  Tell them if it falls through you will give them a call.  Then the next day call them up and tell them they could not get financing; tell them that they are one of three people that you are calling back, so if you want to see it you will need to come quick before it is sold again.
